English 1-2 Course Description

Students pursue a balanced literacy program with an emphasis on writing. Writing activities will be based on literature and non-fiction to provide a highly motivated curriculum. Students will receive instruction in the conventions of standard edited English and research techniques. Students will demonstrate the writing process, applying the process to composing texts in various genres including narrative/autobiographical, literary analysis, expository, and persuasive.

Fall Semester

Semester 1, we will focus focus on The Hunger Games and To Kill A Mockingbird  while also reading various non-fiction articles.

  • Mrs. Beasley, 11th grade typing teacher (queen of the "stink eye") who taught me the value of structure in the classroom.  She did not "play" when it came to finger placement on the home keys.
  • Mr. Otterness, Intermediate Algebra and Computer Science teacher who made mathematical concepts less scary.
  • Ms. Phyllis Lowenthal, my mentor teacher and friend during the crucial first two years of my teaching career.

Robert Frost: The Road Not Taken (1915)

This poem is usually interpreted as an assertion of individualism, but critic Lawrence Thompson has argued that it is a slightly mocking satire on a perennially hesitant walking partner of Frost's who always wondered what would have happened if he had chosen their path differently.

What evidence can you find in the poem to support each of these views?


Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Teacher Bio

Meet the Teacher!

Hi!  My name is Ms. George and I am going to be your English 1-2/English 1-2 ACC  teacher.  This is my 17th year teaching at Millikan High School and 17 years, in total, in the teaching profession.  Prior to teaching, I worked in the publishing industry.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, but I have also lived in a small farming community in Ohio for several of my adult years.

I graduated from UCLA with a BA in American Literature. Additionally,  I have earned a MA in Education with an emphasis in Reading.   As   lifelong learner and enthusiast, I cannot wait to engage you in critical thinking skills needed as developing readers and writers.

I love teaching the 9th grade and I am looking forward to getting to know each of you throughout the school year.  We will have a fun time learning and growing as a group.
