Chamber Orchestra

Chamber Orchestra is an audition-only advanced performance string ensemble class for students with advanced experience in playing string instruments – violin, viola, cello, and string bass. It is designed to offer an enriched learning and performance atmosphere to test and expand the technical skills for student musicians.  Members of this ensemble are also in the Symphony Orchestra.  The course may be taken in both the fall and spring semesters.

Symphony Orchestra

Symphony Orchestra is also an advanced performance ensemble which includes not only the string instrument members of the Chamber Orchestra, but includes selected brass, woodwind and percussion players from Symphonic Winds.  This group does not meet as a regular performance class, but meets periodically through the winter and spring.  The ensemble’s performance season begins with the Winter Concert, continues through the Spring festival and competition season throughout Southern California, and ends with the Spring Concert.

Eligibility:  All students in this ensemble have already auditioned and made one of the above advanced performance classes, Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic Winds.  The top students of each wind and percussion section are hand selected by Mrs. Bhatia to be in this ensemble.

Musical Pit Orchestra

Musical Pit Orchestra is the most advanced and specialized performance ensemble available at Millikan.  A Pit Orchestra is a type of orchestra that accompanies performers such as singers, dancers and actors in musicals and other shows involving music.  Every year, the members of the Millikan Performing Arts Department, including the Drama, Choral, Dance and Instrumental Music Departments, combine to perform a Broadway musical production.  This annual tradition at Millikan can be traced back to at least the 1960’s, and continues to be a strong performance activity today.  The students perform utilizing the original Broadway music, designed for professional musicians.  The music has not been simplified for high school students.  During rehearsals and performances, the instrumental students combine with professional musicians to work together in a  business-like, professional atmosphere.  The reality and intensity of the commitment, musicianship and practice required are a great challenge to the student musicians.  Typically rehearsals are held after school and in the evenings during the months of January, February and March, with the performances held in March.

Eligibility:  This exclusive group is by audition only.  Audition materials are available at the end of December before Winter break or the beginning of January.  All experienced student musicians are eligible to audition.  The number of players required for each instrument is dependent on the requirements of the musical itself and the number of qualified student musicians available.
